about

As unconventional as it may be to release a collection of b-sides prior to releasing the album, or albums, they are associated with, that's essentially what this collection of tracks is. A collection of songs I've written over the years I deem interesting enough to share, but don't quite measure up to the music I've been writing as of late.

After investing a significant amount of time and ideas into a couple of bands that eventually ended (as most do), I neither had the desire nor felt I had the time to start another band. As much as I love being in a band, it's difficult to fit everything that comes along with it into everyone's schedule. Not to mention the fact that when the band is done, those songs are done.

I decided to step up my home recording game and figure out how I could capture a full band sound with the resources at my disposal. Drums and vocals presented the biggest challenges by far. Since the last band disintegrated circa 2007, I've been figuring out the puzzle. Sometime circa 2013 or 2014, I felt I had started to figure out a formula that worked for me. I found a sound that seemed to work with the resources I had at my disposal. While it was nowhere close to rivaling a professional studio, I felt I had figured out something a little bit better than the average bedroom recording.

All of that leads us to now. The other day I was working on a tracklist and realized I had WAY too much material. Essentially, I narrowed potential tracks down to a little over 30. These were the first 9 tracks that didn't make the cut. These tracks simply don't measure up to the other 20 for various reasons. Mainly, the recording quality of these tracks varies, but doesn't rival the quality I've been able to achieve here recently.

When you write a song, there's a fleeting moment of excitement and then you never hear it the same again. Chasing that feeling means continuous writing which means never releasing an album because the next song is always better than the last. I'm dropping these tracks as motivation to keep sharing the music I create. As a starting point of sorts. While they may not meet the current standard I set for production values/songwriting, I figured I spent enough time on them, might as well share them.
